What trekker doesn't dream of getting off the beaten track? Of escaping the congestion of the main 'tea-house' trekking routes and experiencing the real Nepal?
Untouched yet easily accessible, the Gauri Shankar Trekking Area due west of the Everest region is a 'Nepal in miniature'. Only some 150 kilometres from Kathmandu, it offers everything from lush forests to the high snow peaks of the Himalaya - not least holy Mt. Gauri Shankar itself, abode of Lord Shiva and his consort, the goddess Parvati. The region offers scenic trekking at relatively low elevations (generally below 3,000 metres), which means few worries about acclimatisation. No special permits are required, nor are advanced trekking or mountaineering skills.
